Four kinds of hotel, described plainly.
An independent editorial index of art, capsule, casino and ice hotels — written the way you would describe a building to a friend.

Art Hotels
Art Hotels
3 entries
Hotels in this section treat the building itself as the reason to stay. Some were designed around a collection, others grew into one over decades, and a few simply gave the commissioning of paintings, textiles and furniture the same weight as the plumbing. What they share is that a guest walking from the lift to their room passes something worth stopping for. We describe what is actually there — rooms, light, the shape of the public spaces — rather than the language hotels use about themselves.

Capsule Hotels
Capsule Hotels
3 entries
Capsule hotels solve one problem well: a clean, private, well-ventilated place to sleep in an expensive city, stripped of everything a guest does not use overnight. The format began in Japan and has since been reinterpreted in North America and Europe, sometimes as a compact room rather than a berth. The entries here span both readings, and we are explicit about which is which, because the difference between a pod and a small room matters when you are booking.

Casino Hotels
Casino Hotels
4 entries
These are casino hotels: properties where a gaming floor sits inside a larger hospitality operation alongside guest rooms, restaurants, theatres and meeting space. We describe them as hotels first, because that is how most guests use them — the floor is one feature of the building, not the whole of it. Each entry covers the accommodation, the setting and the scale of the wider resort, and leaves the gaming to a sentence where a sentence is warranted.

Ice Hotels
Ice Hotels
1 entry
Ice hotels are rebuilt from scratch each winter and melt each spring, which makes them the smallest and most seasonal category on this site. The genuine supply worldwide is very short — a handful of properties, most of which appear in other editions of this index. Rather than pad the list with inventions or with attractions that are not hotels, we publish the one entry we can write honestly and say plainly that the category is thin.
Open Ice Hotels →Nothing on this site is sold, ranked or scored. Each entry exists because the property is genuinely distinctive within its category — and where a category has run out of honest candidates, we say so rather than fill the space.
